Save the Recreational Trails Program

The U.S. Senate is set to consider an amendment that could save the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is offering the amendment to revise the Senate transportation bill entitled “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century,” or MAP-21.

The current draft of MAP-21 would essentially destroy the RTP by eliminating its dedicated funding source. This amendment is necessary to restore the RTP.

The RTP was created on a bipartisan basis in 1991 to provide funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. Funds for the RTP come from taxes generated by fuel used for off-highway vehicle recreation — by snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-highway light trucks.

Please urge your senators to cosponsor the Klobuchar amendment to save the RTP in MAP-21. A prewritten email is available for you to send to your senators immediately by following the “Take Action” option and entering your information. If you would like to call your senators, click here.
